LIFE LATELY

February 24, 2013

If you follow me on Instagram, you've already seen these photos but I swear it's as if baby Ruthie came along and my instagram game has been nonstop.  I'm sure all new parents can relate but my goodness, I can't stop snapping photos of her! We're still mostly just hanging around the house these days but  Nick did take us out to lunch last week. We also went in to the city to check out some art galleries Friday night and I got my hair chopped off yesterday (!!) but other than that, we're trying to keep Ru indoors away from the cold and away from potential sickness.  Gosh, we can't wait for it to warm up and flu season to be over so we can start venturing out more!

On another note I need a little mama advice: About when will baby girl start getting on more of a feeding schedule? As much as I love it, I feel like all I do is nurse this baby.

  1. we had our little man on a pretty good feeding schedule at 3 days old. i think we got lucky. we made sure he ate every 2.5 hours even if that meant waking him up from a nap to eat. i know, i know, everyone says 'never wake a sleeping baby' but honestly i think that's why he's on such a great feeding schedule. i feel ya with the 'all i do is nurse' thing. it's like you're just the food not the mama too! hang in there, it gets better :) been nursing for 6 months now with no plans to stop!

  2. That's great Bri! My girl is on an every 2 - 3 hour "schedule" too but over the course of 24 hours it just feels like it's all I do. No complaints! I know it's totally normal and I guess we won't really be feeding any less until she's eating solids (which is not for months of course) I guess I just need to be better about nursing in public so I don't feel like we only have 2 hour windows of getting out of the house!

  3. My friend is the ultimate breast feeding momma. I wish I would have done more instead of giving up so quickly. Trust your breasts.

  4. I remember feeling the same way about all of my time being spent nursing. There were days during my maternity leave that I was in the chair all day as nursing and naps intertwined with one another. Some of my son's feedings were 45-60 minutes and then it would start all over again after he slept for a quick bit. I also felt uncomfortable nursing in public at first and it made it hard to get out in the world for fear that I wouldn't have a good place to get down to business. At about 3-4 months feedings quickened up and I became so much more comfortable nursing in public that things all evened out. I guess I never pursued a schedule and just fed on demand for the most part now that I am looking back on it as I read your post today.

  5. I know what you mean! i use an iphone app to track my little ladies feedings so i can see how many times she feeds. It's just called Baby Nursing. For the past couple of weeks she's now averaging 9 feedings a day and i don't feel like i'm feeding all of the time. It helps me distinguish hungry cries from her fighting sleep cries by knowing when she fed last and for how long.

Every once in a while though I can tell she's having a growth spurt because she'll have a couple of days of eating a lot more.

  8. 2-3 hours is the norm for most bfeeding babes. the unwritten rule is nurse baby any time she wants to nurse for the first 2 months or so. every baby is different, ru might get on her own routine, but just when you think you've got a pattern they change. some babies have longer stretches at night 4-5 hours, but i wasn't so lucky... we stuck with 2-4 hours for at least 3 months. for me it was scheduling everything around feeding the little person, but after going back to work i had some supply built up if in a jam. more often then not i preferred to nurse and empty that way than to have someone feed her a bottle. everyone is different though. not sure this will come off as helpful since there is no magic formula.

  9. ps when she gets a tad older bfeeding will be supppper easy in public, like nurse her in the ergo/sling kind of easy and no one will ever know. comes with practice though. she's small enough now where she'd be very easy to cover up too.

  10. @Chris - I use that exact app too! it's been a great tool. We're averaging between 9 and 12 feedings too. I know it's normal, I guess it's just about getting used to this new round the clock (for the most part) schedule :)

  11. @carey - yes good advice. I am feeding whenever she shows signs of hunger whether thats an hour after she's just eaten or 4. Our nights have been pretty good. between 12 and 7 i'm only getting up 2 or 3 times. Like I said to Chris- I suppose it's just a matter of getting used to the schedule.

  14. My daughter nursed every 2-3 hours for the first few months and then around 4-6 months, she would nurse every 4 hours. I nursed her through the night, but some babies start sleeping through the night around 5-6 months, mine did not. She started sleeping through the night around 9-10 months and I would just nurse right before bed and in the morning.
