LIFE IN AN INSTANT

April 25, 2013

Just a handful of Instagram shots of life lately. I sure do love spending my days with this little lady of ours and am so thankful she's just the most laid back, sweet, go with the flow babe there ever was. Speaking of, we're almost to the three month mark and are not on any sort of sleep schedule yet which I kind of love. She naps whenever she's tired (which is still a lot) and just started sleeping 8 hour stretches through the night. (hey, no complaints here!) I love the idea of not having to rush home during the day for a nap time or in the evening for bedtime but I know as she gets older she'll fight sleep and need these scheduled times. When did you mama's start a sleep schedule with your little ones? It seems like there is SO MUCH information out there about the do's and don'ts of baby sleep, it's always nice to hear from real moms about it. PS. did you guys read THIS HILARIOUS ARTICLE on the exact topic? I was laughing so hard because it's so true!

  1. Honestly, I followed their lead, and neither of my guys had a very consistent sleep schedule till they were about a year old. We settled on a bedtime every night, that's about all I felt I had control over and that was kind of important for me, so by around 4-6 months I think we had a (still fairly flexible for semi-consistent) bedtime each night and had kind of a ritual for it. But when they napped, and how long they went between naps, fluctuated so often (we'd have a routine down for a week or two or maybe up to a month or two and then it'd change). I know of other babies who were like clockwork starting at about 3-4 months. I don't know... I think some babies are able to go on a more fixed schedule and others aren't... I tried to get my first on a nap schedule and keeping him up till the "right time" was just so much more effort than it was worth.

So I guess my advice is be flexible, go with the flow, and follow her cues for what she seems to need.

    1. I think this is great advice. I tend to follow the child (in my work life, obviously) so i'm hoping to take the same approach with Ru. I don't want to be disappointed if my "perfect schedule" doesn't work out but I think you're right that a bedtime is a good place to start. Thanks, Marcy!

  2. ha yes i saw that article and it's so true and so funny! just goes to show every piece of advice usually has some conflicting piece of advice back. i too, followed stella's lead. i wasn't really interested in trying to get her on a schedule right away bc i really enjoyed the times when she'd sleep anywhere for a decent amount and still be comfortable and rested. she pretty much put herself on her own schedule and i knew about what time she'd need to nap and try to work my "schedule" around her naps even if it meant "i know she will fall asleep on the way home at this time from the car or she will sleep for 1-2 hours in the stroller if i jog now." it was relaxing and worked for us. bird stayed adaptable until about a year when she was no longer comfy in her carseat and more distracted with waht was going on... and that's when we started scheduling more with being home for that "naptime" gig! i think about 4 months she was pretty regular with her own little nap and eating routine and bed time slowly creeped from 11 to 10 to 8/830 where it is now. i can't relate to 8 hours stretches that early tho! count your blessings... we only had a few random nights she'd do 6-8 hours. we are in a much better spot minus teething, but all and all i can't remember the haze much so that's good for wanting a 2nd ha! going with the flow is what i liked and worked, but everyone is different. i'm sure you two/three are finding your likes/dislikes as you go. and i never meant to type this much oooops. forgive?

    1. I love hearing what works for people. This is great Car. Right now "bedtime" is between 930 and 1030 and it seems to be working well. Id imagine that as the months pass it will move up by an hour or two- she's still in our room so as of now it really works.
