To be or not to be....Organic

July 28, 2010

What makes something organic?  My personal definition of organic is earth friendly-  Something produced with natural "ingredients" NO chemicals, toxins  or unnatural products, dyes, etc etc....The shame is, these days anyone can label their products organic or all natural, which unfortunately is not always true.  GOOD recently interviewed Joe Dickson, who works with the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board and at Whole Foods Market.  Here's a snippet of what he had to say:
GOOD: What does organic really mean?

Joe Dickson: In a general sense, organic foods are grown in earth-friendly ways without the use of toxic or persistant agricultural chemicals.  Thanks to the clear federal definition of "organic," organic food is made of at least 95 percent organic agricultural materials grown using earth-friendly practices without toxic or persistent pesticides. The remaining 5 percent can only contain carefully vetted substances from a short list of approved additives.

Aside from Montessori articles, it's a great  place for reading insights on various topics including child behavior, traditional education, parenting and more! Have a look!

Mr. Pitiful

July 18, 2010

My poor guy. Friday morning my boy was stripped of his manhood and this is what his life has come to.  It breaks my heart.  He is doing really good and as long as I can keep him from licking his stitches, I think we'll be good!  I've been a worried mom all weekend.  How do you guys do this with a furry-less child?

Redesigning education.

July 17, 2010

Is this photo not amazing? If you don't know already, great children's photography, children's design, geography lessons, and opening a child's mind to something bigger than what they already know are amongst my favorite things in the world.  Everything about this picture is just perfect.  It came from an incredibly interesting article about redesigning education in a way that provides a safe, sustainable learning environment specifically in urban environments. Very cool.  "We need to build new environments that support experiential, creative and individualized learning." (sounds a bit like Montessori, eh?)  to read more go here.

Stylish spaces: Sleep & Play

July 13, 2010

There's honestly nothing I love more than Children's design.  These bright, inviting, creative, unique spaces are just beautiful and give such insight on ways to spice up the typical children's space. Absolutely loving these spaces and the suggestions Susanna Salk offers in her book, "Stylish spaces for sleep and play."
