I think there is something so magical about a dream catcher. They're so dang pretty and I love the idea behind them - to catch your bad dreams, allowing the good thoughts to be the only thoughts you have while sleeping. I like the idea of explaining their 'magic' to Ruthie each night before she drifts to sleep in the coming years. I came across these beautiful catchers from a favorite blog of mine, Cloistered Away.

Alycia Mealy is the genius behind Wildflower Dream CatchersThey are stunning and if you are in the market for a beautiful new decor piece for your living space, bedroom or child's bedroom, these are what you need! Cheers to a restful weekend with lots and lots of good dreams :)

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to write you your twelve month letter. As each day would pass, I would ask myself, will I write Ruthie her one year letter today? And until now I was always dragging my feet about it. I guess it's because I have so many emotions about this month in particular. Twelve months. One whole year. Not only have you grown so much but I think your papa and I have too, and maybe that's why this one is a bit harder to write - because as much as it's about you, it's also about us.

My sweet girl - Do you have any idea how loved you are? How worthy and valued you are? We kiss your face and whisper it in your ear almost every hour, yet I know there will come a time in your life where you question all of these things. If you have shown us anything in the past year, it is that unconditional love is real. Through the sleepless nights, and tiny tantrums you have just begun throwing, and the questioning of whether or not we are doing this right, we love you. We love you so much it breaks our hearts a little. Not the sad kind of heartbreak, but the kind where it physically hurts thinking that one day you will hurt. This feeling I have for you, it is overwhelming and all consuming and frightening and exciting. It is thrilling and alarming. It is the very feeling that I'm sure every mother feels for their child yet it seems so extraordinary. Like I am holding this magical secret and got to be the lucky one. I know that's not true but it is hard for me to believe other moms love their children as much as I love you. Of course, I know they do but that is just how immense this feeling of love I have for you is. That it feels as if it is truly one of a kind.

You have turned into such a funny little girl. Laughing and fake laughing at your own little jokes. You think touching my toes is hysterical and if I wiggle them even the teensiest bit while you have hold, forget it. You love other kids. So much so that it is almost a problem. As soon as you spot another tiny human you head straight for them, grabbing their noses and pulling up on them so you can be as close as humanly possible. I love this about you. You are so loving, giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. I can already hear your preschool teachers telling me how you love to help new friends in the class or how you are always the one to ask a friend if she's okay after she's fallen. At least I hope so. I hope that you will have a heart big enough to share and to also let others in.

I can't even begin to describe how much you have changed me in the past year. I have learned to be selfless and how to run on very little sleep. I've discovered how delicious a warmed up cup of coffee at 3 pm can actually taste and most importantly how to share your father with another girl. In fact, seeing your papa with you has been one of the greatest gifts this past year has given me. When I tell you that he is the the whole package, trust me. Your papa is what all the boys (and eventually) men should strive to be for you. He will be the one that gives you a healthy view of men and I can not thank God enough for the example you will see in him. He treats us the way a man should treat a wife and daughter. We are so lucky, babe.

As soon as you turned one, people began to ask when we would be giving you a sibling, and while we do want you to have sisters and brothers, we are enjoying you so, so much. It is hard to envision another little human around here because you pretty much hang the moon in our eyes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the first time in my entire life, I am content. I can't thank you enough for showing me how to just be.

My heart is struggling to end this letter. As I read back through it, it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface on what this past year has been. I am not the writer I wish I was - I just don't have the ability or talent to write the right words. You are every bit as wonderful as I hoped a child of mine would be. Motherhood is incredible in every way I could have imagined. I am so lucky. That might sound silly to say I'm lucky, but it is true. Everyone doesn't get to have this job or love it the way that I do and so I will say it again. I am so lucky. Thank you, Ruthie, for the best year of my life. I so look forward to watching you grow into the amazing person you are destined to be.

I love you x infinity forever and ever and to the moon and back. I love you so much.

Hey friends! Just a little head's up that Little One Love was nominated for Apartment Therapy's Homie Awards in the Home Design Family and Kids category.  We are just thrilled. Currently at the top of the list are some of the biggest blogs out there so I certainly do not expect to win, but the honor of being nominated is just as good to me! If you have a minute and wouldn't mind, I'd love a 'vote'. (I think you actually have to create an account, which literally only takes about 20 seconds) I can't thank you all enough!

Here's a little bit of background info on The Homies from the Apartment Therapy site:

Since 2004, when we started, the blogosphere has changed, but one thing has remained the same: the remarkable number of people with talent, humor and a passion for sharing their lives, projects, cooking, and other skills at home. They are just often harder to find. The Homies isn't a competition as much as it's about celebration and discovery, and it was started to give more attention to the home design and cooking space than web awards usually give (they usually just lump us all in under "Lifestyle").

Thanks, guys!!

Noch Mini is gearing up to launch SS14 and I think the simple stripes and light tones of the coming season are just darling. Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for a special giveaway from Noch Mini here on L O L B. (YAY!) Here are a few words about Noch Mini. Such a rad company....

'NOCH mini is a New York based directional childrens line committed to designing simple, sophisticated and organic clothes. The designer, Jina Jang, studied at Parsons School of Design and has worked for Bill Blass, Tommy Hilfiger, Ann Taylor and Kenneth Cole. After Jina’s daughter was born, she wanted to provide her with the highest quality and healthiest choices, including clothes. She found most organic clothing options to be limited in design and color, leading to the launch of NOCH in 2010.'

It's been about a month since we purchased our Breville espresso machine and let me just say, life is forever changed. I guess that might be a bit dramatic but really, life in the kitchen sure is a lot more fun with our machine around. We had been wanting an espresso machine for some time and decided against buying one another christmas presents and instead gifting ourselves with home made cappuccino's and latte's. Best decision we ever made. I can't even tell you how much I look forward to my #dailycapp (as I refer to it on instagram.) My friend Jess started taking photo's of her afternoon cappuccino's and after we got our Breville, I couldn't help but play along. (You should definitely be following her, if you aren't already.)

There is something so inviting about putting my baby down for her afternoon nap, making myself a pipping hot cappuccino and cranking through some emails and blog posts. Just one of those simple things that happens daily around here that I am so thankful for. I still haven't mastered how to make the perfect capp but they are good enough in my book. Also, we are on the hunt for the perfect espresso shot mugs and cappuccino cups.  If you know of a good source, let us know! Cheers to the cozy afternoon pick me up!

The awesome folks from Montessorium asked if I'd share some inspiration on my continued love of learning to help kick off their new project Love + Learning centered around the idea that you learn best from the ones you love.  I chose my husband. Hop on over to their blog to read a little bit more. Happy Valentines Day!

Kindred Oak is a new to me brand that I'm really, really digging. My mom actually discovered them (yay, mom!) and got Ruthie a pair of the tribal leggings and a headband that are both are just adorable. I'm loving their tee's and accessories too. I'm a sucker for anything tribal and this brand is definitely tapping into my love of aztec. No complaints here!

I posted a photo of Ru in her leggings just the other day and have to say they are just darling.

We are going on our 100th day of being snowed in and are getting a little bit sick of our toys, books, and house in general, so today we set up a little sensory activity for the babe and had her go to town. We filled up the biggest bowl I could find, grabbed a few measuring cups a cake spatula and two simple little animal bath toys and headed into the tub so she could splash as much as she wanted. There's not much to it really. She loved "stirring her water" and patting her hands in it. It's the perfect little sensory activity that you can pull together in under 5 minutes.

Side note. I added a MONTESSORI tab to my link bar (^^ way up there ^^ ) so if you are interested in seeing some past montessori posts there's an easy to place to do it now.

I am beyond excited to unveil the new L.O.L.B logo! I worked with amazing designer, Renee Kohl on the new look and am just thrilled with it. I wanted something modern, muted, neutral and something I knew I wouldn't tire of in a year. She hit the nail on the head. I also worked with Blog Milk on the new layout and am very pleased with it. If you are in the market for a new, modern template and don't have the skill to write your own HTML and are still using a host, like blogger that doesn't give you full creative control, blog milk is a great option! Anyways, here she is. I have been working on getting this live for the past week and am so glad it's finally up! Happy Wednesday!

How could I not use a birthday picture for this week?
My sweet babe's first taste of cake, in her birthday crown and birthday suit on her very first birthday.

February 2, 2014

It's safe to say today was a pretty fun and special day. We still can't believe this girl of ours is one but it seems that she just keeps on growing and keeps on getting smarter and more silly and more fun and even sweeter (if that's possible.) as the days pass so I guess it's true. We have a one year old!  Our house was filled with grandparents and aunts and uncles and friends and it was the perfect way to celebrate our girl and all the wonderfulness this past year has brought.

You might remember my birthday party inspiration post from a couple weeks ago and see that I threw those idea's totally out the window (except for the crown) and went with bright colors, which is so not like us. I'm happy with the way everything turned out and am glad I just went with it. I don't think Ruthie minded the change of plans :)

For those that are curious, Ruthie's mini cake and our guest cake came from Brown Bear Bakery (and they were totally amazing.) The highchair is a vintage chair purchased from a local estate auction. Ruthie's little crown was made by me just using some felt and a leather strap. Her romper is Tea from local boutique, the spotted goose and the mugshot prints hanging in our dining room are from Larken Design
